Thanks so much for the video! I’ve always admired Ortlieb pannier bags, even though I haven’t had the chance to own one myself. Right now, I’m using some budget-friendly Rhino Walks from Amazon. They've served me well and seem surprisingly durable, holding up against a lot of wear and tear, plus they’ve braved plenty of rain, considering I ride my bike every day, even through Boston’s harsh winters. My only issue with them is their size-they have a maximum capacity of 27 liters, which isn't quite enough for my needs. I’m curious about the Ortlieb 40-liter bags. Could you let me know their dimensions in both their folded state and when they are fully expanded? Specifically, I’m interested in how big they are when the bag is folded down to its smallest carry level and when it is opened up to accommodate larger items.

I use 4 ortlieb front classic rollers plus a rack pack 24 litre across the rear. Balance-equilibrium is everything. I've completed 8K km tours across the EU by road without luggage problems. Only drawback with front panniers I've noticed is the increased air resistance especially on mountain passes. They knock 20kph off downhill speed. Best wishes

I wear 32 degree (brand) skivies, inside-out. The seams are always sewn on the inside so inside out makes the smooth side of the seam on the outside. Duh

Don't forget to mount on the rack some sort of abrasion protection otherwise your bags going to be punctured in time mine got almost punctured with minimal usage.

You're frame is way to small!

I don't think it's likely most people would break a bone falling over sideways at 0.2 mph. Of course its posible, yea, probably more so the older you get depending on if you have bone densi5y issues ( of which I have no personal clue what mine is). All of my more serious wipeouts had nothing to do with my feet being in pedals but with my handlebars being diverted by something at speed,, lack of traction on corners/wet leaves or gravel at intersections where I was doing or turning at too high a speed for the condition, a screwup or two while no handsing, or front wheel diversion falls created by ruts or rocks I ran my front wheel into, And riding without studded tires and pancaking into the cement after an ice storm-- low speed but painful. And I've had one over the handlebar incident going down a moderate downhill trail and striking a largish rock under fallen.leaves with my front wheel. Luckily for me I've never been seriously injured in sny of these, unless I have some TBI I'm unaware of, on ( off) a bike though, with nothing more than contusions or scrapes ( and lots of swearing)...no broken bones. I feel lucky..

The stiff soles of a dedicated bike shoe probably add 5-10 percent extra didance per day or reduce your power use for a given distance by 5-10 percent, by not eating energy "squishing" the sole of the shoe with each pedal presenta. . For a tour the cumulative effect of that might be significant enough for me to change pedals and shoes and carry a walking shoe in my bags.... It's not important to me for my utility riding though.

Definitely good advice to cut things out/find alternatives to make that first trip easier! Finally did that first 100km out trip I've been wanting to do for a while. Biked to a provincial park where I met up with friends who were driving who were able to bring all my camping gear. Had a great friends trip over the weekend and left my things with them again and took only snacks/water/bike repair stuff to get home.

I've cycled Toronto to Montreal six times I think. It's always such a great route, and it's gotten better over the years. It used to be just highway #2, but now there are lots of options. If you're up to a bigger challenge, try riding the Gaspé. It's breathtaking and quiet and my favourite cycling route of all. I'll follow your trip with interest. Be safe.

mehr Schein als sein ...! Liest mal die Bewertungen, so der verschiedenen offenen Plattformen. Die Qualität hat massiv nachgelassen. Greenwashing, dafür ist VD bekannt. Meine VD Fahrradtaschen hatten sich nach einiger Zeit aufgelöst, der Kleber der Nähte hielt nicht, die Taschen bekommen einen weißlichen Film. Der Fachhändler hatte viele solche Reklamationen im Lager zu stehen. Die Rückenplatte, die Vernietungen sind gebrochen. Nutze nur noch Ortlieb, da kann Mensch die Bestandteile auch einzeln bestellen und tauschen bei Bedarf. Thema Zelt, verschweißte Nähte, dass Band löste sich, ja kann alles passieren, aber nicht wenn das Zeug neu ist und man ewig mit dem Kundenservice diskutieren muss. Der Kundenservice ist eine Katastrophe. Das Zelt war undicht und schlecht verarbeitet. Nein kein Kondenswasser. Nach 4 Monaten, ja nach 4 Monaten hatten wir das Zelt dann von Vaude zurück erhalten... es wurde ein neues gesendet. Warum hat das 4 Monate gedauert???? Kleidung und Ausrüstung kommt doch alles aus Fernost Vietnam China ... , dementsprechend ist auch die Verarbeitung und Qualität. Wir meiden komplett Vaude!!! Gibt viel bessere Hersteller!!!

Hello, Been a touring cyclist since 1971 here. Just FYI ; ' bike packing ' is just a word. Sometimes, in this consumerist capitalist system that we're forced to live in, we are forced to hear new words because they're trying to sell us a bunch of new stuff, all under a new banner, of a new fad. But bike packing is just a word. Like changing violin to fiddle, or football to soccer, it's the same thing as touring. Bike packing is meant to sound like 'back packing'... that's the big pun. Riding a bike is riding a bike, and carrying gear and camping and living on the road/ route, is all pretty similar. It's tough, and I've had a long life of it. Now along comes this word. It's like other new words that pop up, trying to sound fresh and different, but it's the same as bike touring was in the 1920's. Touring. What's wrong with a perfectly good word ?

Always interesting to see what other fellow bikepackers take with them :D What you said about the pillow is true. For me at least, I "hated" overnight trips in the wilderness because of lack of sleep. I always tended to wake up on every sleeping cycle (~ 90min or so), rolling around and finding it hard to sleep. Nowadays I've done everything to get my sleeping on the same level (or even better?) than in my home, and a single __pillow__ was the main tool for me! Good sleeps are key ingredient for good trips! (And I've done many more things to help my sleep: - QUILT so I can roll around and feel like having a blanket like in home - Trying to set up camps NEARBY LAKES so you can go swimming before sleeping and get rid of that sweat, sunscreen and bugspray - WIDER sleeping mat so I can roll around and sleep on my sides - Melatonin on those nights I feel like I'm not tired enough to fall asleep.)

When i decided to get back into mini bike adventures about 20 years ago (3 nights in summer) I only took a sleeping bag, sleeping mat, paper map and a bike. No phone, no tent, no cook set. Like you say, you just gotta do it. All things will evolve with experience anyway.

I've had Vaude (you do not pronounce it like you do) bags for about 10 years. Never -ever- had that thing pop out. And I change the settings on that a fair amount, most people wouldn't since you'll use it on one bike. I have no idea how you did that. I use mine for a daily commute.

dem ortileb handle bar bags ain't all that good. They are way over priced like a 100 dollars, and the thing i don't like about them is the ride up to high on da bike blocking your view of your front tire and you cant mount lights on the handle bar either. it blocks them. even with a handle bar extention its up to high. so i like the cheap amazon handle bar bags that do the same thing but ride a lot lower, but they sag some. i'll use the cheap bags that are warter proof and have an insulated lining in them for snacks and drinks or beer. can put a cup of ice in there too. comes with a map case up front to. i can mount handle bar lights without blocking the view. just saying!! However, i do like the way you have your bike loaded. I load mine very similar!! thanks for sharing!!

look, i have some very similar fork bags just like that!! they are rock brothers bags. they are very nice and i like them a lot!! but ortileb are really nice bags, but they are way over pirced. My bags together coast 60 bucks for the 7 lt bags. A lot cheaper than ortileb.But on longer rides i need front rack panniers. So i chose to keep them on my gravel touring bike!! they are good for over nighter or 3 day trips, but for longer rides i prefer font panniers. So i bought an axiom front rack and rear rack for my touring bike. Lets talk about ORTILEB for a minute. I have bought manya panniers in the last year off amazon, and they are very good bags. One set has the same locking mechanicim as the ortilebs does and i really like that. they are all waterproof. but i wanted a pair of front rack panniers, and ortileb wanted 129 dollars each on there 14 lt bags. they were pretty and green. I lik them a lot, but for the money i bought a pair off of temu for 15 dollars each. high visability orange waterproof pvc bags. the locking system is not as good as the orilebs, but for 30 dollars vs 260 dollars it was a no brainer. In my opinion ortileb is way over priced for what they offer. maybe one day i can afford ortileb bags, but until then i will use other brand bags that are just as good. There is no doubt about how good the ortileb bags are, but it is not nessasary to put all that money in bags when there are other bags just as good. esp the fork bags. I bought some rear pannier bags with same locking system as ortilebs, and they were 30 dollars a piece. And then again i bought some himway bags off of amazon for 39 dollars a piece for 3 way bags that were made very well. heavy pvc but well made. i had to buy rain covers for them because the zipper part leaked real bad when tested in da shower. but the same bags for ortileb were 170 dollars a piece. just don't see buying ortileb!! nice video and thanks for sharing!!

Why waste time with the tease at the beginning

Ortlieb user but having said that I have punished and overloaded my Vaude panniers (Aqua back deluxe) on my daily commute and they're great value too given they're usually a lot cheaper. From a use and function point there's very little in it other than price. Just remember to periodically tighten all the hook adjusters. On both brands.

Rechargable electronics--micro Sofirn SC21 Pro Anduril 2 flashlight on handlebar mount in daytime flash mode (slowest "party strobe" mode) which can also switch to emergency bike light mode if needed. I also bring a headlamp strap it will fit in. Anduril has stepless dimming. Also--another Anduril 2 3000 lumen Wurkkos TS21 flashlight along with an extra 5000 MaH 21700 rechargeable battery. This light has reverse charging, so I can use it to charge my phone, the Sofirn light, my daytime flasher tailight, my GPS bike computer--I have a micro electric bike pump, too, but haven't had to charge it on the road.

Jeesh. Just use SPD bike sandals. Bring waterproof breathable socks to use with them for bad weather. Hiked up the Lassen Peak volcano trail on a tour using them, the only footwear I took on the 14 day tour. I like the Shimano sandals best. They are also great for wide feet, though mine are narrow. The Romans conquered their empire in sandals. A Roman statue in Britain shows one wearing socks with sandals...

Sixty dollars a night for two cyclists to set up a tent...in a park that we taxpayers fund...pfft! Just 'Rough Camp' it.

Carry an adjustable guy line wrapped around a peg, handy in the top of bike-bag. Tie end to seatpost/frame, to keep bike upright. There isn't always something handy for it to lean against.

Good video with an objective comparison. Sometimes it just comes down to money. Purchased the Vaude Aqua back w/o the side pocket, for half the cost of the Ortiebs - easy decision. Used them on 4 trips so far and they are still in great shape. Have also had the lower rack attachment piece come loose and fall out - easy to put back in - I feel it was user error on my part for unscrewing it too far - haven't had that problem since. Reviews i've read praise both brands - but the price is the price.

I don't cook on tour. I recently discovered peanut butter in a squeeze tube. It's pure genius. No need to muck up a knife. Just buy some kind of flat bread (pitas, tortillas, etc.) and you can have a quick roadside meal. BTW, after 13 tours I still haven't found enough space for food on the bike. When will they make watermelon-compatible panniers? I HATE clipless for most of the reasons you mention. Here's another. I have wide feet. Using touring-specific flat shoes or just any kind of shoe with a stiff-ish sole means you can find a shoe that fits. For off-bike walking, I go with Teva sandals.

Are those the Velo orange crazy bars? How are you liking them? Torn between them and the Koga denham bars.

What tent do you use?

drive side rack bolt on the Sulry Bridge Club - same issue with my BC. A washer or two, or a shorter bolt work for me.

For me, bicycle touring is about freedom. That includes having my feet free. I wear the most comfortable shoe I own (not cycling-specific) to tour. Sometimes that's a sandal.
